Hoya Grande is one of the neighborhoods in the northern municipality of the island of La Palma, Garafía. It is the base of the island’s highest peak, El Roque de los Muchachos, the highest point on the island at 2,426 meters, and home to the IAC’s La Palma facility, which, together with the Tenerife site, hosts the largest network of telescopes in the Northern Hemisphere, bringing together more than seventy scientific institutions from nineteen countries, including Spain. This collection of state-of-the-art instruments is part of the European Northern Observatory (ENO). The road leading up to El Roque de los Muchachos passes through the neighborhood on the north side, as there is another road access via Mirca in Santa Cruz de la Palma. The neighborhood consists of two distinct areas, separated by the Barranco de Oropesa: El Bailadero and Hoya Grande itself. Its main activities are livestock farming—primarily goats—and agriculture, making it an ideal area for grape cultivation, particularly on the slopes of El Lomo de la Ciudad and El Lomo de Jerónimo. The most renowned variety for its nobility is Albillo, which is also produced in the neighborhoods of Catela and El Castillo. It produces a wine with broad, balanced fruity flavors, a slight hint of sweetness, clean and fresh notes, and a long finish, evoking the aroma of the Atlantic Ocean that laps its shores. Recently, old rural mansions have also been restored, adapting them to modern times and preparing them for comfortable living. These properties are now being put into operation, creating an increasingly important economic source that allows visitors to enjoy landscapes and natural environments of significant anthropological and social value, while also serving as a complementary means to boost the area’s economic income.
