As a large family from Vienna, we fell in love with the North Sea during our several-year stay in Hamburg. So much so that we and our five children felt compelled to save one of the most beautiful houses on the Eiderstedt peninsula from falling into disrepair and lovingly renovate it. That’s how we created a permanent home in the north. Our children have always joked that we’re most interested in houses without roofs—and that’s exactly how it turned out… the old Frisian longhouse with its leaky thatched roof was damp, musty, and furnished in the style of the 1980s when we discovered it in 2017. The former parsonage was built around 1780 in a park-like garden complete with extensive ponds on a mound (a hill built by hand to protect houses from storm surges). It lies in the heart of the Eiderstedt peninsula, in the center of the romantic picture-book village of Tetenbüll, which is unique for its majestic St. Anna Church, the historic merchant’s shop in Haus Peters, and the historic ensemble along Dörpstraat. Yet no one else recognized the value of this unique structure in the center of Tetenbüll. In 2018, we renovated the old thatched-roof house—with the support and recognition of the historic preservation authorities—from the ground up, extensively and carefully, transforming it into a private North Sea hideaway and furnishing it to the highest standards with many personal touches.
